What is Anime?

This section has anime definitions and links to help someone new to anime find their way. If you're surfing our website wondering what anime is all about, the hope is that this section may answer a couple of your questions.

  • Anime is Japanese animation, sometimes in the West called, Japanimation. It is often characterized by stylized colorful images depicting vibrant characters in a variety of different settings and storylines, aimed at a variety of different audiences.

  • Manga is the Japanese word for comics; outside of Japan, it usually refers specifically to Japanese comics. Manga developed from a mixture of ukiyo-e and Western styles of drawing.

Most of the time, anime comes from a manga, Japanese comics. Once in a while, you'll get an anime first, and the manga will follow, but as a general rule, anime comes from a popular manga series. The manga are sold in a series, either a week or month at a time. Please consider that these comic books are read once, and left on the train by business people for someone else to read. The number of readers is huge! As with anime, manga comes in many genres for all age groups - manga for businessmen, women, boys, girls, romance, fashion, adult titles, sports and more. It's a huge industry in Japan, and very, very popular.

Kai Animation sells manga and anime to many types of people. These media are not necessarily age specific. You can probably find a series that you will find interesting/exciting no matter what you like to read or watch.

Manga and Anime - Many Genres

Shoujo and Shounen styles of anime and manga are not written these ways to discriminate between boys and girls, it is done full well knowing that girls and boys like different styles of stories. This is more of a way to market the stories, than any type of negative segregation. Further on this thought, Josei refers to anime and manga series for young women. Seinen is meant for the young adult male demographic.

Where to go to Learn About Anime

Here at Kai Animation we have a description on a detail page of each thing we sell. You will find that detailed description once you narrow down your selection to an item. We have hundreds of anime DVDs and manga and a description of each one of them! We have a webpage with Anime Preview Trailers. We have an online Anime Forum. We keep adding to the Anime Preview Trailers. We recommend that you visit our Anime Forum, read what people are saying and join in the conversations.

Where we go for Anime Information

If we want to know something about anime we'll probably start at one of these places.

  • Absolute Anime is very informative website. You can research anime series or anime characters by title, by genre and by region. This website is very easy to use and it has a ton of good information! By the way Ken Innes is the lone webmaster on this site. Read his profile.

  • Anime News Network is a real place to get anime news. They have anime news, editorials, lexicon of anime terms and a great encyclopedia. Their encyclopedia has a synopsis and production credits of probably every anime series. This is a good time to credit ANN with the anime synopsis in this section. This is more than an important website, it is valuable!

  • Japan Reference is an informative website truly devoted to Japan. There is more to learn there than anime. If you are looking for information about Japan's art and culture or about the language or about travel to Japan this is a good place to look.

  • Anime Conventions is a fun way to experience anime overload. If you get interested enough in anime a trip to a local anime convention should be on your list. One fun thing that can happen is to see the people who do the anime character voices.

What Was the Show You Saw on Cartoon Network?

Here is a list of shows Cartoon Network is playing with a little synopsis.

  • Naruto - When Naruto was born the spirit of a evil nine-tailed fox was imprisoned within him, rendering him the hate of the villagers in the ninja-village of the Leaf who feared the demon in him. Countering this hate he grew into the role of the clown, trying to attract attention by making a fool of himself and his teachers. But within him dwells the dream of becoming Hokage, the strongest warrior of the village. When he graduates from the academy he's placed in the same group as Sakura, the technician and the girl he loves and Sasuke, the strong, quiet guy and his rival for Sakura. Leader and teacher of the group are Kakashi, the strange and always late, though powerful ninja.

  • InuYasha - Higurashi Kagome, after being pulled down a well by a demon, finds herself in feudal Japan, where she learns that a powerful jewel has been reborn inside her body. After the jewel shatters in an attempt to retrieve it from one of the many demons who was after its power, Kagome must join forces with the half-demon Inuyasha (also after the jewel's power) to track down the shards of the jewel before its power falls into the wrong hands.

  • Trigun - Vash the Stampede is a gunman on the run with a 60 billion double dollar bounty on his head. Because of the bounty, every town he ever visit ends up being destroyed because of his pursuers, but miraculously no one ever gets killed. Meryl and Milly are two insurance agents that have been sent to find Vash the Stampede and keep him under surveillance. Meryl, who leads the pair, can't believe that the man they have met can possibly be the legendary gunman. This spiky haired, gangly, and blonde young man is extremely friendly, a pacifist, hates blood and suicide, absolutely loves donuts, and is a dork and a crybaby... There is no way he could be Vash the Stampede. However, there's more to Vash than just smiles and donuts; a dark past that he would like to leave behind is hounding him, and some people are pursuing him for other reasons than the bounty.

  • Dragonball GT - Goku, the hero who destroyed the evil of Frieza, Cell, and Buu in DBZ, learns that an old foe, Emperor Pilaf from DB has captured the 7 magical Black Star Dragon Balls, which, at the cost of the planet the balls are on, can grant any wish. Pilaf wishes that Goku is a child, and Goku becomes a child. In order to save both the planet and restore Goku to adulthood, Goku must alliance himself with Trunks and his granddaughter Pan to find all 7 Balls all over the universe. Over time, they encounter foes like Baby, Super 17, and the Invincible Shadow Dragons.

  • Samurai Champloo - Mugen is a fierce animal-like warrior with a unique bboying (break-dance) inspired fighting style. Jin has a more traditional style but don't think of this as a weakness because his skills are amazing. The two contrasting Samurai warriors are far from friends, yet their separate paths seem to cross anyways. Mugen is wandering aimlessly through the city when he stumbles upon a teahouse where he meets Jin and Fuu (a ditzy waitress, but don't think she doesn't have anything hidden up her sleeves). Fuu convinces them both to come with her in search of a mysterious Samurai that smells like sunflowers and their journey begins. this modernized hip-hop tale breaks the barriers of the common, historical, Samurai Anime.

  • Fullmetal Alchemist - After losing their mother, Alphonse and Edward Elric attempt to bring her back using the forbidden science of human alchemy. However, alchemy operates on the theory of equivalent trade, and breaking the human alchemy taboo carries a heavy price. Ed loses his leg, and Al loses his body. Ed is able to seal Al's soul inside of a huge suit of armor, at the cost of his arm. Years later they leave their childhood home, their true objective is to search for any information on the fabled Philosopher's Stone, hoping it will allow them to regain their old bodies. All of their hopes rest with this mythical stone, which may not even exist at all. However, the brothers soon learn that they are not the only ones after the powerful stone.

  • Lupin the Third - Arsene Lupin III is the grandson of the master thief Arsene Lupin. With his cohorts Daisuke Jigen and Goemon Ishikawa XIII and his love interest Fujiko Mine, he pulls off the greatest heists of all time while always escaping the grasp of inspector Koichi Zenigata.

  • .hack//legend - Shugo and his twin sister Rena, two new players in the world, (a future online role-playing game) are caught up in an unknown agenda. Unstoppable monsters have started appearing and players that encounter these monsters fall into comas in the real world. Playing the limited edition characters, Kite and Black Rose, and the wielding the mysterious twilight bracelet, the two siblings must figure out what is going on and stop it before the damage escalates.

  • Gundam Seed - Heliopolis, a so-called neutral space colony was holding a top-secret weapons research facility, producing Gundams for the Earth Alliance. Zaft, which is composed of coordinators (genetically modified/upgraded humans), attacks Heliopolis, stealing 4 out of the Alliance's 5 Gundams. In the battlefield, civilian Kira Yamato stumbles upon the strike, the last remaining Gundam of the Alliance, and is forced to pilot it. In the midst of battle he encounters his best friend, Athrun Zala, as one of the hijackers of the 5 Gundams, who sides with Zaft. Being a coordinator, he is the only one who can pilot the Gundam. But Kira is not with Zaft, even though they're his own kind, nor the alliance. Since the alliance is the only place he could turn to at the time, he sides with them. He pilots the Gundam to protect his friends, and to fight his best friend, which pains both of them. It's a war between individual beliefs.

  • FLCL (Fooly Cooly) - Naota is a normal Japanese 6th grade boy (although a little cynical), but when his older brother leaves for America to play baseball, his brother leaves his homeless 17-year-old girlfriend Mamimi behind. Mamimi is sending mixed signals and advances to Naota, and he doesn't know what to do about her. But to make matters worse, Naota's world is totally turned upside down when he is run over by a woman on a Vespa. During their first encounter, she hits him over the head with her guitar, which then causes a horn to grow out of his forehead. She calls herself "Haruko" and her presence changes Naota's life to even further insanity.

  • Case Closed - Kudo Shinichi is a seventeen year-old high school detective whom people call the "Modern Sherlock Holmes." However, one night after a date with his childhood sweetheart, Ran,Shinichi witnessed an illegal trade and, caught off his guard, was knocked unconscious and fed a drug that was supposed to kill him... But he woke up and found himself shrunken to a seven year-old. In order to track down the men who did this to him, shinichi hid his identity and lived with Ran, whose father happened to be a hopeless detective, and with that came a series of murders and mysteries that he must solve.

  • Ghost in the Shell - In the future, life between the digital and physical world has been blurred. The boundary of technology and humanity has been stretched beyond imagination with lives being led in both the electronic and physical worlds. With the melding of man and machine a new cybernetic level of existence is being created - an existence that continues to redefine mankind.
